Dangerous animals

Law 50/1999 and Royal Decree 287/2002 regulate the ownership of potentially dangerous animals in Spain. This regulation requires an administrative license to own or handle certain animals, primarily certain dog breeds. This license is valid for a period of time and must be renewed periodically.
Term of validity
Valid for 5 years (may vary depending on the autonomous community or city council).
Documentation required for obtaining/renewing
Requirements may vary by municipality, but the following are generally required:
- DNI/NIE or passport (original and copy).
- Medical certificate of psychophysical aptitudes issued by a psychotechnician
- Criminal record certificate : proving that no serious crimes have been committed.
- Proof of civil liability insurance : Minimum coverage of €120,000.
- Animal documentation : Health card | Microchip and updated municipal census.
- Municipal tax (varies by locality).

Security measures
- The presence of potentially dangerous animals in public places or spaces will require the person driving and controlling them to carry a license, as well as a certificate proving the animal's registration in the Municipal Registry of Potentially Dangerous Animals.
- They must wear a muzzle appropriate to the breed of each animal.
- In public spaces, they must be led and controlled on a chain or non-extendable leash of less than 2 meters, and no more than one of these dogs may be carried per person.
- Potentially dangerous animals found on a farm, country house, chalet, plot, terrace, patio, or any other delimited area must be kept on a leash, unless there is a suitable enclosure with a surface area, height, and enclosure to protect people or animals entering or approaching these areas.
- Breeders, trainers and traders of potentially dangerous animals must have adequate facilities and means for their keeping.
- The theft or loss of the animal must be reported to the city council within a maximum period of forty-eight hours.
